With over a decade of experience in steel, Douglas Powell founded Duzi in 2023 to showcase the craftsmanship and design style he has developed over the years. His journey began with summer jobs under an iron worker’s mentorship, providing invaluable practical insights into the trade. This phase culminated in a year at the Bicycle Academy in 2014, a pivotal moment that made him realize that true craftsmanship is a lifelong pursuit filled with learning opportunities. After completing his product design degree, he took on diverse roles, from building steel frame bicycles to working as a fabricator and site carpenter, embracing the philosophy of being a jack of all trades. Douglas recognizes that mastery in multiple areas enriches his overall craft.

Now, in 2025, he sees himself as an artist and apprentice to his evolving practice. He is continuously evolving and currently exploring creative possibilities to refine his unique style.

‘As a designer and craftsman I recognize that my work is an outcome of my individual way of absorbing the world around me. The people, the places, the incredible intricacies of nature, the objects we surround ourselves with and the skills I have learned along the way, each with their own story to tell.

From living in Africa to Europe and now Australia I recognise the impact these places have on my work and feel privileged to be able to call this place that inspires me, Walyalup, my home.

I want to acknowledge and pay my respects to the Custodians and Traditional Owners of this land, Elders past and present who have looked after these lands and waters for millennia.’

‘Consider this collection of work as my culinary adventure into the world of design. Each piece is a recipe, carefully crafted with a blend of creativity, innovation, and a touch of whimsy.’
