Douglas Powell is a designer-maker whose practice bridges product design, metal fabrication, and experimental artistry. Rooted in craftsmanship, his work explores the balance between control and spontaneity, allowing material and process to guide the final form.

Originally from Zimbabwe, Douglas trained as a product designer in the UK before becoming a certified metal fabricator. Now based in Australia, he is exploring the use of hydroforming—an innovative technique where steel is inflated under pressure to create organic, fluid shapes. This approach results in striking mirrors, vases, and chairs, each piece shaped by the unpredictable forces of the process itself.

With a deep respect for raw materials, Douglas embraces their natural imperfections, highlighting their textures and inherent qualities. As a master craftsman, he fabricates every piece by hand, ensuring that each work is not only an object of function but also a statement of artistry and material exploration. His creations challenge traditional boundaries, redefining what metal can be in contemporary design.

‘As a designer and craftsman I recognize that my work is an outcome of my individual way of absorbing the world around me. The people, the places, the incredible intricacies of nature, the objects we surround ourselves with and the skills I have learned along the way, each with their own story to tell.

From living in Africa to Europe and now Australia I recognise the impact these places have on my work and feel privileged to be able to call this place that inspires me, Walyalup, my home.

I want to acknowledge and pay my respects to the Custodians and Traditional Owners of this land, Elders past and present who have looked after these lands and waters for millennia.’

‘Consider this collection of work as my culinary adventure into the world of design. Each piece is a recipe, carefully crafted with a blend of creativity, innovation, and a touch of whimsy.’
